Art in the Arches public artwork celebrates love in Vauxhall

15/07/2021

A stunning outdoor art gallery in Vauxhall has been created to celebrate Vauxhall’s railway arches and their links within the LGBT+ community. The Arch Company sought to partner with Vauxhall One and Moniker Culture – a contemporary art platform – to develop artwork during Pride month with the theme #LoveDifferent.

Working in partnership with the local business community, the project transformed an array of arches along Albert Embankment and Goding Street. These arches in Vauxhall were selected as they were vacant, with an ambition to bring bright public art into the space and brighten up the local area. As a responsible landlord, The Arch Company wanted to improve the arches for those who live and work nearby, whilst ongoing plans to let the arches continue.

Eleven different artists were chosen to portray their interpretation of #LoveDifferent, including Penfold (Tim Gresham), Luke Smile, a typographic artist, illustrator Roxane Dewar, Italian artist and Illustrator Gianinna Delpino, botanical print designer Leila Vibert Stokes, collage designer and animator Flavia Felipe, Graphic designer Craig Yamey, graphic designer  Susheel Basra, Muralist, Illustrator and self-professed Doodler Luke Embden, Artist & graphic designer NERONE and Thomas Kirk Shannon, VAULT Creative Arts.

Charlotte Cywinski, Portfolio Asset Manager at The Arch Company says: “we’re really pleased to see this creative initiative come to life at the railway arches in Vauxhall. The arches are home to a brilliant and diverse range of businesses that The Arch Company is proud to champion.”

Luke Embden x Vauxhall Mural x Love Different advised “My site-specific artwork is paying homage to the numerous nightclubs and music venues near the arches. Vauxhall for many years has had a prominent LGBT+ community which stands loud and proud within Vauxhall, and I wanted to honour the community by including as many references as possible, especially with the huge heart as the focal point for my piece… Love is always the answer!”
